Surely you already know what Florida Water is. Or perhaps you’ve seen it behind the counter at the bodega, or in the home of a spiritual grandma. Either way, it’s got a long and winding history:
Murray & Lanman Florida Water was first introduced in New York City in 1808 as an alcohol-based essential oil concoction inspired by the Fountain of Youth, which according to lore, existed in the Spanish colony of Florida. It’s a blend of lavender, citrus and spices and was originally intended for medicinal purposes, though it was mostly marketed as a cologne.
Somewhere along the way, it became a replacement for holy water – used for ritual offerings, to block out negativity and for purification in Voodoo, Hoodoo, Wiccan, and Santeria practices. How did it go from a commercially produced cologne to a “the baking soda of the magical world”? There’s too much to say to fit into a product description, but you can read the whole story here.
While Florida Water typically comes in a tall, skinny bottle, we like this aerosol version – for easy use in clearing rituals, or simply to fragrance a room.
